Faxanadu comparison
(This project does not yet have a website.)

This project vies for a 95% accurate re-creation of the introductory part of the NES game "Faxanadu." This is a dry, trial run to see if such a thing can be accomplished using Game Maker, and to ascertain the feasibility of re-creating this and other classic NES games on modern platforms. The ultimate goal is to obtain permission to reintroduce classic properties to the burgeoning iOS and Android markets (i.e. mobile device markets generally) along with desktop and laptop markets.

As a general rule, I hope to maintain an 85% accurate "trueness" to original titles but will endeavor for 95% accuracy. I will provide a "classic" graphical user interface (GUI) which will display the classic graphics, in addition to options which will allow the user to switch to "modern" graphics which will take advantage of 30+ years of hardware and software improvement. Sound quality will likewise have such optional changes. Game-play, however, is one aspect which will remain unchanged save for fixes where necessary. For example, in the NES version of "Faxanadu," the player has a "knock-back" whenever the character sprite comes in contact with an enemy. This effect, which was meant to convey damage or injury, could severely interrupt the game-play experience, sending the character back an entire screen if too close to the edge when the collision occurred. In such cases, due diligence will inform any necessary changes--due diligence informed by an almost obsessive need for accuracy.

This project is being produced at a resolution of 1024x960: a 4-fold increase from the NES resolution of 256x240. As such, there are now 4 times as many pixels per sprite block; sprite blocks which were 8x8 are now 32x32. This 4-fold increase in graphical fidelity is sure to please the eye but will require significant effort to fill in the extra space with additional detail. Also, the NES palette of 64 colors now has added upon it the full range of the modern 32-bit color palette! (16.7 million colors times 256 shades of alpha-blend!)

Philosophy major completed. I got a 3.52 GPA which is good considering some low grades here and there. Some of the papers I wrote were actually published!

I intend to finish the SMB1 ponification in the ensuing weeks.

Looking for a full-time job.

I am knee-deep in the semester at BYU and cannot soon return to my ponification projects. I apologize for this. I may apply for an April 2015 graduation. If so, I should be able to return to these projects.

There's several bugs when playing Super Pony All-Stars (especially when playing on a mobile SNES emulator):

SMB1/SMBLL: When you collect a Super Mushroom, the background and sprites become a glitched wreck, and at random points (including the title screen demos) you'll swim around.

SMB2: Sometimes, the Shy Guys will warp to a random location.

SMB3: When starting it up, it becomes completely unplayable, resulting in a black screen with no music or sound effects.

I suspect that these errors may be introduced by the emulator. This was tested on SNES9x. It should player the same way on ZSNES as well. I did not test this on mobile SNES emulators.

Well, the only current mobile SNES emulators are SNESoid and SNESdroid. Both are for Android devices, hence their names.

I forgot to mention that there's a romhacker named Insetduel that could finish the remainder of your Ponified Super Mario Allstars romhack.
